What is the Talk Shop all about?

The Talk Shop has always been a rather unusual organization. It started off as a paper I presented at a conference in 1993. The name is actually a pun. One meaning is the notion of conversations about work and business, while the other refers to the idea of a shop that sells “talk“. Conversations are a great tool when it comes to communication. As a cognitive psychologist, I know that they have some distinct advantages over other communications, like a lecture, or debate or even discussion. The main benefits are derived from two important characteristics of a conversation. The first is the obvious interactive nature of a conversation. Unlike a lecture, the conversation is bi-directional and even multi-directional if there are more participants. Although conversations are not perfectly balanced in its mutuality, there is far less power structure than other forms of communication. A debate or argument, on the other hand, is aimed at convincing the other and winning the argument. The second characteristic is its loose structure. Conversations may start with a focus on a general area, but it has the flexibility that is maintained by the interest of the participants. If you happen to move into a new town the quickest way to get a feel of the place is to have conversations, not just read maps.
